Kaoru was born into the Hitachiin family, seven minutes and six seconds after his brother, Hikaru. The Hitachiin family is a very wealthy and prestigious family in Japan, who have a lot of influence amongst other, lesser, families.

Kaoru attended Ouran Middle School and Ouran Private Academy (High School), satisfactorily completeing Computer Technology, French, English, German, Italian, Drama, Visual Communication, Japanese, World History and Fashion Design. The last one he took because his Mother degined clothing, and she had passed her obsession down to her youngest child. Being one of her models when he was little helped spur him along. He liked the pretty dresses. <3

He also attempted to complete all of the classes his twin, Hikaru, was taking. He didn't get very far.

But going back in time a bit, to when he was a little chibi-Kaoru. He didn't (doesn't?) have any siblings other than Hikaru, and because no-one could tell them apart, he never had any friends. It's a long story, so I'll give the shortened version;

They wouldn't play with any other children, unless those children could tell them apart and call them by name. (A canon example would be when they were in Kinder. It was snowing, and a little girl walked up to the bench they were sitting on and asked if they wanted to build a snowman. They asked who she was talking to, to which she replied "Why, both of you, of course!" Together; "There's no boy over here called 'Both of You'." "Hikaru and Kaoru, then!" "But..." "Can you tell..." "Which is which?")

As they grew older, they dubbed this the "Which One's Hikaru-kun Game!"

For years they had their own little world, which no-one else would be allowed to enter. Kaoru always believed that everyone outside of their world was stupid, and was quite happy to just ignore them.

However, in his last year of Middle School, a certain blond boy approached he and his twin with an offer. See, in Ouran High School, there were clubs that the students were allowed to create and maintain. This boy wanted to make one, the "Host Club".

Kaoru had shrugged it off, intrigued but not too bothered. He'd talk to Hikaru that night about it, see what he thought.

...But then, without him knowing how, he was opening doors and throwing rose petals around, saying "Welcome to the Host Club!" and playing the uke to his brother.

Oh, yes, uke thing. Right. The main idea of the Host Club was (is?) to bring happiness to the female population of Ouran. Each member had their own pitch - tall, dark and handsome, princely, mysterious, stoic, chibi (shouta, I think it's called) and "Forbidden Brotherly Love~". You can guess which one Kaoru was a part of. Shouldn't be too hard.

Where was I? Slowly, their world began to expand. First, Kaoru wanted to build up metaphorical defenses and bring out the big guns. But after a while, he relaxed, seeing how letting in some people - one at a time, mind you. He wouldn't have them over-populating his world - would be good for his brother, whose social skills were pretty damn poor. Can I say that? "Damn"?

Everything that Kaoru buys, he buys two of. One for him, one for Hikaru. He learnt various forms of martial arts, but can't use any of them without his brother around. It just doesn't feel right to him, to fight without Hikaru.

If he's left alone for too long, he'll start to over-think things. He'll freak out, and fight tooth and nail to get back to Hikaru. If he can't get to his twin, he'll probably curl up and die. If he's left alone, that is. He needs something to keep him occupied at all times.

Sleeping, he can't do properly without Hikaru. He's that dependent on him. He'll get in about one to two hours of restless sleep, before he wakes up and decides to go for a walk. He can count on one hand the times he's been away from Hikaru for more than three hours, and he didn't like any of those times. He relies on Hikaru for just about everything - if Hikaru's not there, Kaoru can't do it. At all. He can barely eat without Hikaru.

To Kaoru, there is no "me", "my", "I". There is only "we", "us" and "our". He's still in denial about them having to go their seperate ways later on in life.

Right! More background! I think I'm going to be using two comments. Ah well, if "Personality" were here, it'd be three. =D

After graduating from Ouran at 18 years of age, he was planning on becoming either an actor or a clothes designer. Other options were there too, but he'd only go into something if Hikaru were there, too.

He's pretty avid about things he's interested in, but most of the time, he quickly loses interest.

Now that he's older, Kaoru isn't as glued to Hikaru's hip as he used to be. However, he still doesn't like being away from his brother for more than a few hours. One night, and he'll start showing signs of hysteria.

Personality: Kaoru may be the quieter of the two, but that does not mean that he isn't as tricky as Hikaru.

From my point of view, Kaoru is Hikaru's Kyouya. Hikaru comes up with pranks, and Kaoru makes them work. (This, I believe, is why Hikaru insisted that Kaoru was the eviller of them.)

Kaoru loves languages, and while he is generally nice to people, one second of a bad first impression will be enough to make him point out every single grammatical or spelling error. If there are none of those, he will, quite possibly, go right for a personal attack.

And he'll also call Hikaru in for back-up.

Kaoru can, and will, change his mood in a split second. He makes his decisions about people based on his first look at them - he takes their hair into account, their make-up, their clothes, and even the socks they're wearing - and sometimes, he may humor people for a while before dropping the truth.

He may pretend to make friends with people, to use them for his and Hikaru's needs. Sometimes, they may actually become friends. This, Kaoru will deny completely and utterly.
